Tell us about your approach to designing Riva Residences and how it enhances the architectural landscape of Xemxija Bay.

At Archi+, our vision for Riva Residences was to create a development that feels deeply rooted in its surroundings, embracing the essence of coastal living while introducing a contemporary and enduring architectural language. Our design approach was guided by three key principles: harmony, openness, and fluidity.
We envisioned residences and sky villas that feel expansive yet intimate, where seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces enhance the experience of living by the sea. The architecture is carefully positioned to maximise panoramic views of the Mediterranean while allowing for privacy and tranquility within each home. The way light interacts with the building throughout the day was also a major consideration, floor-to-ceiling glazing, deep balconies, and natural shading all work together to create a dynamic, ever-changing interplay between architecture and nature.

How would you describe Riva Residences’s architectural style, and how does it complement the area?

The architecture is elegant, refined, and enduring, designed to complement Xemxija’s natural landscape rather than overpower it. The use of natural materials, clean lines, and soft textures ensures that the building feels integrated with its surroundings. Inspired by the organic forms of the coastline, we’ve designed a facade that captures movement, depth, and light, allowing the building to evolve beautifully over time.

What are some key design features that set Riva Residences apart?

We focused on three core elements: space, light, and connection to nature. Each residence features floor-to-ceiling glazing, high ceilings, and generous open-plan layouts that maximise views and natural ventilation. The sky villas take this a step further, offering private terraces and splash pools, creating an elevated sanctuary by the sea. Sustainability was also key, with energy-efficient insulation, cross-ventilation, and thoughtful material selections that enhance both comfort and longevity.

How does Xemxija Bay influence the design of Riva Residences?

Xemxija Bay is one of Malta’s most serene coastal locations, and we wanted to design a development that feels like a natural extension of its surroundings. The curved, flowing forms of the architecture echo the movement of the sea, while the use of earthy tones and natural stone finishes pays homage to the rugged beauty of the coastline. The result is a harmonious balance between modern sophistication and Mediterranean authenticity.
